An older couple bought an old schoolhouse and wanted to renovate it. The building, however, was filled with honey bees! Since they were experienced gardeners and knew the value of bees, rather than destroying them, they looked for other options. The first year, they basically worked around the bees, trying not to disturb them. With some research, they located a bee keeper who was willing to navigate the process of moving the bees. As time and experience would have it, they discovered they enjoyed working with the bees and began the business journey of honey production!
Life is full of surprises and certainly the couple who found the bees must have been surprised by the way their lives were changed from the purchase of a schoolhouse! We were surprised when our family visited out West thirty years ago and discovered that is the place we’d most like to live. It was designed as a simple vacation. Moving was the furthest from our minds. We had our children, my husband was solid in his career, yet we were drawn to another place.
Other times, health circumstances change our path. My cousin, some years ago lost her husband, as a young man, from a massive heart attack. Her life was forever changed as she began a new road as a widow. She took on new responsibilities, had to make a career change to be able to support herself and much more.
Having a child can change “career” plans too! I admit when my husband and I discovered we were going to have our first born, we had to make very different plans than what we had. My husband was a hard worker, but a financial crisis hit our country right about then, and a career change had to be made. What he was earning was simply not going to support our growing family!
Sometimes it’s finding our “voice” that was buried deep within us, through circumstances we had no control over that causes a change, as we discover we aren’t at all who we thought we were! As a young person, I had a variety of different dreams. It did not occur to me as a high schooler, as an early married momma, even as a mom with four children that I would become a writer! It wasn’t until I was carrying my fifth born that I began seriously writing.
When I began putting my thoughts and feelings on paper, it changed my life. Words became my “honey.” It is what brought me fulfillment, yet daily remained challenging! We all have “honey” in our lives that waits to be uncovered so we can become the person we were meant to be. It’s that “sweet place” in life that defines us, even if we don’t recognize it until we are older.
Don’t ever give up on your dreams! Be open to the possibility of change, as life drops surprises that requires a shift in thought pattern. Don’t be afraid of it. You may be pleasantly surprised!
