While the speaker’s introduction was less than traditional, it was kind of funny at the time, but the more I thought on it, the more I think it was completely unprofessional and strikes me as someone who is setting himself up for a break down of his immune system because he is certain he is the next one to “fall.”
A young woman who lived near me some years ago seemed to have every malady that came down the pike. If “it” was going through the neighborhood, she was sure to catch it! And if she checked her symptoms out on the computer, she would diagnose herself and was convinced she was either in the process of becoming severely ill or already had! Can our thought processes cause us to become sick?
Our state of mind can literally affect us in a physical way. There is a huge connection between the body and mind. There is still much the medical community does not know. But one thing is certain, if you tell yourself you are sick or are going to be, you likely will be! It’s the reverse of taking a placebo (sugar pill) thinking you are taking genuine medication to treat an illness and get better!
Stress is another factor to add to the “I’m going to be sick” concept. Stress is a weird producer of all kinds of issues. I read one article about a man who was convinced he was blind in one eye, and had been for ten years. He went to an eye doctor who discovered the man wasn’t blind at all. He was able to trick the eye into seeing! That sounds bizarre, and the thought was stated that surely the man was faking so he could take his “seeing eye dog” into business establishments. But that isn’t likely since he went to the Doctor about his eye. He believed he could not see out of it!
I’ve also heard the story of a woman who lost complete motion of her right arm, even though the doctor’s could find nothing wrong with it. While I can’t remember the details of this story, it turned out it was totally stress related. Once the stress was identified, she regained use of the limb.
So I challenge you to consider how you handle stress or “germs” when they seem on the prowl! Do you expect to be next in line for some kind of illness? Could you be talking yourself into getting sick? If you recognize you are, could you work the reverse and talk yourself out of it?
