The last couple weeks have left me reeling as I read about babies being left along side a road. My mind rejects that as impossible, even while I know it is fact. What possesses a parent to be so selfish and self centered they are willing to place a little one in danger and cast it off like it was no more than an old pocketbook? There are families who would give everything they own to have a little person to love.
Or, what possesses any adult to handcuff and beat a nine-year-old boy to death because he ate a piece of birthday cake without permission? It’s completely irrational. And the rape crimes; again I can’t get a handle on this. Rape is a cruel, violent crime that leaves irreparable scars.
As bad as all this is, I can’t help but wonder how we as a society, have become acclimated to crimes to the point where we read the news, then shrug our shoulders, even as we say, “That’s awful!” We skew our faces and squint our eyes in horror, yet have the terrible ability to make light of the situation as we discuss the particulars with a neighbor! We agree it's awful and then for the most part, just forget it. It’s become so commonplace, it doesn’t seem to matter anymore. What does that say about us as a society? What does that say about me?
We teach our children right from wrong, yet it seems like it often falls on deaf ears. What makes a child veer so far from what they have learned? I’ve read in just the last couple days about a twelve year old wanted for murder! How does this happen? What causes character qualities to be so far removed, that horrific crimes surface from the children we know and love? What gives a person the right to believe they should put people “in their place” with disregard for their feelings, upbringing, and faith beliefs? What has happened in our world to create trivialization of human rights?
That said, I recognize this is not really a new problem. It's been around for centuries. But it seems to be morphing. It's not even remotely localized. It seems if a person has an issue with another based on what he perceives as right and wrong, good and bad, faith beliefs and the way he worships, skin color, how he talks or dresses or even what part of the country he comes from, qualifies as justification to administer great harm or even murder!
There is this apparent haphazard attack on people, like small children who get angry at a toy that isn’t operating the way the child wanted. The child, in frustration, will sometimes throw the toy, stomp on it, or give it to the dog because it has lost it’s value. In a bizarre kind of way I think crime is sort of the same mentality. It’s like nothing has any value anymore; not people, relationships, privacy, businesses, friends; not anything! Life is just completely devalued.
What can one person do? I'm not an expert and even searching for answers leaves me a bit bewildered. The best advice I could find worthy of trying is to stay informed and be willing to call the authorities if you see something suspicious or out of the ordinary. Be willing to help a neighbor while at the same time remain optimistic in the good of people, yet cautious because not all are! Our world is changing rapidly, and I’m not at all certain it’s for the better!
