Sadly, the vindictiveness of this behavior can bring greater consequences than possibly even the person being malicious, out of anger, realizes! Once something like that hits the “air waves” it takes nothing short of a miracle and a lot of embarrassment to set things right. In reality it creates a nightmare since photos lead to all kinds of misunderstandings and depending on the shot can even be considered pornography!
We live in a world where the mentality is “it’s all about me” and getting even, when we believe we’ve been offended. It may sound like a waste of time, but it’s very important to take care of our accounts, even when we don't believe there is anything to hide, because the ramifications can be dramatic!
Besides face book accounts, we have email, bank accounts, contacts, credit cards and more, which can be hacked. It depends on how energetic and how much ingenuity the hacker has to the amount of damage inflicted! According to an ABC news article, January 2014 “The 4 Ways You'll Get Hacked,” it happens to many of us, catching us unaware.
One method used is receiving an email claiming to be from our financial institution and requesting us to click on a provided link to take care of the matter, they suggest is urgent. The problem is, that link is the likely culprit of a virus on your computer which enables the hacker to information otherwise not available. 1
The second way the article mentions requires a little more specificity because the hacker is more specific on who is contacted—often through a financial service agency, tailoring the message from someone else within the financial institution, but again requiring a click on a link. 1
A third way includes using phone number databases. Again using the ruse of a bank or financial institution they request your account number, social security number verification or other information which opens the door to the hacker. 1
The fourth way hackers invade our space is even more sophisticated and subtle than the others. Using a cell phone number they are able to text people, disguising the number to look like one of a financial institution the victim is familiar with, or even affiliated. It only takes a click and the hacker has access to iPhones and other devices, and be certain, there are other ways hackers can absolutely ruin us. 1
My point is, thieves have been around since time began! We live in an environment run on technology. From the moment we wake with our electric alarm clocks, and brush our teeth with electric toothbrushes to computers, iPads, iPhones, iPods at work and play and everything in between until we turn off our electric lights at night, we are in a technological world where stuff, ugly stuff, can happen! Thieves of information which make our lives miserable by stealing identities or private information which cleans out our bank accounts, or placing provocative photos on line is a misery we all must be diligent about conquering and destroying!
I challenge you to especially remember to monitor your accounts….all of them! Change your passwords without sharing the information with others! Change security questions; be creative with your password, use different passwords for different sites and make sure your computer is secured, by an update anti-virus program. It may be what saves you from being hacked!
