Studies show those diseases like measles, mumps, and whooping cough which were nearly obliterated when I was a child, seem to be making a come back, supposedly from travelers from other countries. There are those who contend these diseases would not be nearly so problematic if children were immunized. Apparently, shot schedules have changed over the years and some immunizations that were standard years ago, have been altered. Along with the change in necessary shots, are the boosters needed, and many parents have not availed their children of these, so the medication given at an earlier date, become less effective.
Doctors insist the pain received from getting shots is miniscule compared to the protection from the disease and complications should they get the disease as an older person. Some even contend getting the full schedule of shots could save a life.
Now, all that said, with our culture changes and mobility of people across the world, and the strains of diseases mutating, the list of necessary immunizations is getting longer and longer. How can you know for sure which ones you really need? Even the flu shot seems to have its share of issues since the strains seem to change so rapidly, year after year.
The other side of the argument contends vaccinations do more harm than good. There seems to be data that indicates vaccinations cause autism in some children, as well as, other issues like Crohn’s disease and Asperger syndrome. According to one article, autism has become an epidemic in the United States and the problem is believed to be from vaccinations. Studies show there seems to be several different links between the vaccination and illnesses. One problematic element is a mercury based preservative which is found in some of the vaccines, which some data reveals, causes possible neurological damage.
Parents who choose to not get their children vaccinated believe the germ theory is inaccurate. They feel the diseases are contracted from toxins within the body from dietary mistakes and chemical pollutants in food, water and air, rather than bacteria or a virus.
There is also the belief that a child who endures a particular infection like measles or chicken pox, actually does the child a service since the body becomes stronger by ridding itself of the toxic wastes which causes the disease. They believe in the long term, the body’s ability to rid itself of these wastes will improve their physical and intellectual abilities and even possibly their creative endeavors.
One major ramification about non-vaccinations is the ability to enter a public school system. You must have all scheduled immunizations before entering elementary school. And immunizations are also required upon entering the military. Here again there are two sides. There is the mandated side that holds to precautionary immunizations when going into another country. But there are those vets who are questioning, rather strongly, about the health issues related to the mandated immunizations and are trying to change the rules.
Like I said earlier, both sides seem to have valid points. How does one decide? What criteria do you use to make the decision about your children? Do you have an opinion regarding the flu shot?
